The unparalleled experience that goes into each of our boats is a result of over three decades of professional boatbuilding to the very highest specifications. There are quite literally hundreds of TREEVE BOATS working daily throughout the year in extremely demanding environments, consequently their seaworthiness is second to none.
The 1960's saw the closing of so many wooden boatbuilding yards, especially those yards long established as small inshore specialists and builders of beach and cove boats - which were the life blood of the small fishing communities throughout the South West. Styles and types were regional but localised down to the level of one builder for 1 or 2 coves. The shape of the keel or the lift of a bilge and the length of a bilge keel differed in detail down to just a few miles of coast or just a bay or headland.
The individual builder with his personalised understanding of those local requirements is already passing into the pages of history but not altogether, there are a few builders left almost down to one or two per county. We feel at Treeve Boats we have retained that tradition of individuality of construction.
Rising costs in 1976 brought us to the conclusion that no longer could we continue with so many varied designs individually crafted in timber. The transition was started from timber frames with foam and glass-fibre, through to solid fibreglass hulls. The necessity had arrived and the time was ripe to produce a standard 16' cove boat.
Based on the knowledge and traditions of fishermen throughout the Penwith area from the Doom bar of Padstow past Hayle, St Ives and Sennen Cove around the treacherous Lands End. and into Mount's Bay, passing Pemberth, Lamorna, Mousehole and Newlyn. The sea conditions experienced in this small corner of the United Kingdom are as violent and varied as can be found anywhere along the British coast. TREEVE BOATS are constructed to standard far in excess of the specifications laid down by Lloyds and are built by craftsmen, highly qualified and experienced in their respective trades. The resultant combination of traditional hardwood fitting out and the strength of the modern GRP hull has found favour with satisfied customers throughout the world.
Every TREEVE BOAT is individually tailored to the customers specific requirements and the list of applications is endless. Orders have included boats for use as ships tenders, ferries, harbour launches, safety vessels, passenger launches, pleasure cruisers, angling boats, sailing boats and last but certainly not least, hundreds of professional fishing boats.
You can rest assured that as a customer of TREEVE BOATS you will be treated to a personal service that is second to none in the industry and that your boat will have a pedigree synonymous with strength, durability and economy of operation.
The Designer Denis Swire C.Eng, FRINA is the country's leading name in the continuous development of traditional Cornish hulls, incorporating them into his modern design concept of easily driven rigged workboats with outstanding operational economy and seaworthiness.
The many and varied designs to emanate from Denis Swire, range from ocean going yachts through to heavy duty trawlers, high speed vessels and GRP displacement hulls, to our own unique DS range. In all there are now 500 designs of Denis Swire originated craft in successful service worldwide. With this pedigree is it any wonder that discerning customers choose TREEVE.
Our own DS24 is a direct descendant of Denis Swire's own personal craft which has had 20 years of continuous development in the demanding environment around the Lands End peninsular. Mr Swire's personal observations while at sea have proved to be a valuable source of direct and continual feedback. Consequently we can assure potential clients of the most attention to detail.
We have had many requests over the years to produce a vessel between the 16 and the 20. In 1990 I approached our designer, naval architect Dennis Swire C.Eng FRINA, to design 2 new additional boats to our range - the DS 18 and DS 24.
Because of the success of the DS 20 under sail, with the first of this new series named the Rights of Man owned and skippered by Mr D S Pratt, I asked Mr Swire if he would design the new vessels as, for the first time, genuine dual purpose vessels capable of producing the same speed with engine or sail power.
The DS 18 and DS 24 are the first of this new class of vessel, specifically designed by Dennis Swire, who has refined the technique of driving a vessel easily through the water with the minimum power requirement. For example the 16 requires a minimum of 7 hp the 18: 10 hp the 20: 15 hp and 24: 22 hp.
I would note that these speeds are obtained at slack water with no tide to push. You will note from our technical specification that we recommend larger engines to enable the owner to meet any sea conditions in his vessel. For practical purposes we have always fitted larger engines feeling that the old maxim of more horses do the same amount of work with less effort holds true. |
