Treeve Cove Boats are a modern development of the traditional Cornish fishing boat and although a compact 16ft in length have the strength and carrying capacity of much larger vessels. Catches of 200 Stone (1 tonnes) on board have been recorded together with man and equipment. Originally developed for professional fishermen they are built to specifications that exceed the scantlings laid down in the Lloyds recommendations and are almost double that of EEC requirements. These boats have a long proven track record of hard work and safety in the heavy seas of the south west coast.
Conditions could not be tougher than at Penberth Cove near Lands End. Rugged seas, hard work, and the need to be winched up and down the granite slipway everyday and in all weathers make terrifying demands on any boat. At Penberth the vast majority of fishermen put their trust in the Treeve Cove Boat.
In order to protect the boat from abrasion by gravel, rocks and coral when beaching, the Mk III has a number of special adaptations. A pair of heavy duty bilge keels is fitted to keep the boat upright when beaching, These are protected by a set of keel irons, through-bolted with internal lugs, The sterngear and rudder are completely protected from impact and abrasion by an extra heavy duty keel iron, skeg and rudder shoe.
We made the decision to base our new 16' Treeve Cove boat in the main on the traditions and skills of this concentrated area. The Mark I 16 was first launched onto the market in 1976/77 with an overall length of 15'9" a beam of 5'9" and a draught of 1'9". This proved to be an immediate success and kept our yard very busy for the next four years when it was time to replace the original mould. This was done by modifying a Mark I with the addition of bilge keel flats, 16' overall length and 6' beam.
The Mark II carried on until 1982 when the time had come for a total redesign. This resulted in the new Mark III with its modified bow incorporating a narrower and finer forefoot, fuller bilges, convex transom, higher sheerline and double keel option. The double keel option is to allow the fitting of an additional wooden keel which enables the craft to be launched over rollers.
Most of the modifications have come as a direct result of feedback from customers as to how they felt their own boats could have been improved. Although many of these customers now recommend the Mark III, none of them to date has found sufficient faults in the Mark I and II to necessitate them replacing their Mark I's. I would recommend that the reader should, if possible, take the time to visit Pemberth Cove - which is near St Buryan Penzance, Cornwall - to examine the fleet of 12 Treeve Cove boats of all models which fish on a daily basis from this picturesque cove.
