- Red Sail 18

This vessel is available in two main versions, a Gaff rig cutter, essentially an open sailboat, and the 'Weekender' which has a cabin.

GAFF RIG CUTTER

The RS18 red sailboat can further be supplied in either bilge keel or balanced keel versions (by balanced keel we mean traditional deep straight keel with internal ballast). Sail plans include lug rig single or two masted; gaff sloop; gaff cutter or Bermudan.

These rigs are supplied with Oregon Pine masts and spars traditionally oiled with white caps (the traditional Cornish way of painting the top foot of the mast white). Running rigging is in look-alike hemp which is in fact terylene; the blocks are timber; the mast bands eyes shackles etc are in galvanised steel; the standing rigging is in either galvanised or stainless steel to individual preference.

The sails are supplied either in 8oz or l0oz tan commercial grade terylene with bound and stitched ends and reefing points. Sails are supplied in a heavy duty terylene sail bag. There is a large clear open area of the full deck - which can be fibre glass water tight; self draining or traditional loose board or laid deck - enabling the sailor and crew, whatever their experience, a lot of room for sailing operations.

The high bulwarks, a minimum of 2'6" amidships, make the new RS18 especially suitable for young families giving that additional safety that a deep sided bulwarks affords. The standing rigging is carried clear of the deck and bulwarks onto chain plates outboard port and starboard.

With its hull based on the rugged and Denis Swire designed and well proven DS18 this craft is built for the romantic and provided everything from hard sailing to leisure cruising depending on your mood. There is plenty of room on board for family and friends to join in and enjoy traditional Gaff Rig sailing at its best.

WEEKENDER

The masts may be stepped either through the deck to step on the hog in the traditional way or in the weekend layout on a tabernacle mounted above the deck. Steering is by a traditional timber transom hung rudder. The weekender layout has a short cabin top forward of the cockpit, and will take two berths forward one each side and a small cooker on a locker port aft by the bulk head with a sink unit with water carried in a plastic container underneath.

A head may also be installed under a seat to starboard. The head room in the forward cabin is 5'6". The bunks are 6'6" in length the cabin is entered via steps and a sliding hatch over double cabin doors. If an internal diesel engine is fitted, additional ballast will be obtained by a tank which is filled with sea water and discharged by valves on launching and recovering the vessel by trailer on the trailing version.

Thwarts have been mentioned these may be fitted, although strictly they are not necessary if the hull is fully ribbed.  The Lloyd's scantlings (measurements) for ribs, which are not normally fitted in a pleasure boat of this size, enables the hull to be rigid enough not to require further stiffening by the use of transverse thwarts. All hulls may be fitted with a watertight deck or cockpit. Side benches may also be fitted port and starboard of the aft seat, with additional locker space if required.

In conclusion, we cannot guarantee the conditions in which you sail, but we can assure you of the very best materials; attention; skill and expertise that has gone into the construction of our fishing boats for the last 30 years.

The hand lay up method used to construct the hulls, has proved to be the most reliable way of insuring an exact lay up to meet the specifications laid down. The traditional use of heavy timber sectioning applied in fishing boat construction, over many generations, has no better. Our principle has always been strength and durability above all other considerations.

Although we work from standardised plans and drawings, all the vessel are individually tailored to a high degree, to suit as near possible the exact requirements of our clients.
